Arizona Golf Courses & Tee Times

Arizona's state golf association dates to 1923. Now called AZ GOLF, it governs amateur golf in the state, issues handicaps and course ratings under a USGA contract, and counts over 575 clubs and 100,000-plus golfers. The best-known public stage in the state is the Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale, home of the WM Phoenix Open since 1987. The tournament started in 1932, and in 2016 it drew 618,365 fans for the week. Public golf goes back much further in the cities: Randolph North in Tucson opened in 1925, and Encanto in Phoenix in 1935.

Tee times in Arizona are easier to get when you know when they open. Who runs public golf in Arizona

The biggest public golf programs in Arizona belong to the cities. Phoenix has five 18-hole and three 9-hole courses, and a Premium card for Maricopa County residents gets discounts at all of them, Papago and GCU included, with tee times nine days out. Tucson City Golf runs five courses at four complexes, and its City Card covers all five. Tucson's courses carry real tour history. Randolph North hosted the Joe Garagiola Tucson Open and the LPGA, and El Rio was the first home of the Tucson Open, where Babe Didrikson Zaharias Monday-qualified in 1945. For juniors, AZ GOLF runs Youth on Course: $40 a year for ages 6 to 18, and rounds for $5 or less at participating courses.

Booking tee times in Arizona: the local rules

In Phoenix, card holders book nine days out (up to 14 online for a fee), everyone else calls 602-534-GOLF or books online, and a missed time costs $20 unless you cancel 24 hours ahead. Tucson City Golf takes bookings at (520) 791-4653 or online. In the desert, fall is overseeding season: Phoenix's courses each close for two to three weeks between early October and early November.

Getting a tee time in Arizona

Arizona is a winter golf destination. The months other places shut down are the busiest here, so November-through-April mornings go first, weekdays included.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
