About Wigwam Golf Resort - Gold Course
The Gold is the big course at The Wigwam, the old Goodyear resort in Litchfield Park. It's a par 72 that Historic Hotels of America says goes by "Arizona's Monster." Robert Trent Jones Sr. built it with long canals and wide fairways, and the map survey counts water on 9 holes, about 43 bunkers and barely 10 feet of elevation change. It's a flat, long test where the canals and sand do the work. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. It hosts USGA qualifiers for the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur.
The story starts with tires. Goodyear built The Wigwam, and a gardener named Jacques Phillip laid out its first nine in 1930. In the mid-1960s Goodyear wanted an answer to rival Firestone's new country club in Akron, so Jones split the existing 18 into two courses and built new holes, and the Gold, modeled directly on Firestone's South Course, opened first in 1965. In the early 2000s the firm Richardson and Danner restored it using historical aerial photos and Jones's original plans, and it reopened in 2005.
