About The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale

Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf built the Stadium Course for the PGA TOUR as a stage for the Phoenix Open, and it opened in 1986 in the Sonoran Desert with the McDowell Mountains around it. The tournament moved here in 1987 and has grown into the biggest spectator event in golf. The other 51 weeks of the year, it's a public course you can book.

Everyone comes for the 16th. It's a par 3, and for tournament week it's fully enclosed by grandstands that hold about 20,000, the only hole like it on tour. Tiger Woods aced it in 1997, and 11 other players have made a hole-in-one there during the Open, most recently Emiliano Grillo in 2025. For 2026 the tournament put up a new four-story structure around it.

Weiskopf came back for a $15 million renovation in 2014. He resurfaced every green, built new ones on 2, 3, 4 and 14, and moved bunkers into the pros' landing areas. GolfPass noted that many of those bunkers are out of reach for everyday players, so the change made it a little easier for you. The 12th has water behind the green, and the 18th has a lake down the left and, since the renovation, Oakmont-style church pew bunkers for anyone who takes it on.
