About Mountain Dell Golf Course - Lake
Mountain Dell is Salt Lake City's canyon golf, 12 miles east of downtown up Parleys Canyon at 6,000 feet, and it runs cooler than the valley in summer. William F. Bell's original 18 opened in 1962. When the city doubled it to 36 holes, William Howard Neff split Bell's holes between two courses: 13 went to the Canyon, and the rest went into the Lake, which opened in 1991 with Neff's new holes.
The Lake stays lower and closer to the water than the Canyon, which climbs. The holes Neff added were built around deep ravines, water hazards and narrower, rolling fairways, so it asks for more precision than the older parkland holes. It's a par 71, 35 out and 36 in, and 6,637 yards from the black tees. The course record is 62, by John Tagge.
The whole property is Salt Lake City's main drinking water source, next to the Mountain Dell Dam, so there are no houses on the fairways, and moose and badgers are common. Walking is allowed, but the hills and the long stretches between some holes send most people to a cart. In winter the city lets the Utah Nordic Alliance groom cross-country ski trails here.
