Bonneville Golf Course

A 1929 city course on the East Bench, five minutes from downtown: William Tucker's first nine, a Bell second nine from 1956, and the whole valley in view.

About Bonneville Golf Course

Bonneville is Salt Lake City's course on the East Bench, five minutes above downtown, with the mountains behind you and the whole valley out in front; the sunsets are part of the deal. It's a par 72 of 6,729 yards from the black tees, 6,429 from the blue and 5,977 from the white, with shorter sets down to 4,688. The course reminds you the sun is stronger at this altitude, so bring a hat and sunscreen.

It's the city's tournament course. The Salt Lake City Open, a 36-hole event for Utah Section PGA pros and top amateurs, is played here, and so is the Salt Lake City Amateur, named for longtime Bonneville head pro Richard C. Kramer, with a 156-player field. The Utah State Amateur has been held here too. The course records are a 61 in competition by Mitchell Schow and a 60 in regular play by Mack Christensen.

The city's Parks Department built it in the 1920s as Sunnyside Golf Links, named for the nearby Sunnyside reservoir, and a public contest picked Bonneville before it opened on May 24, 1929. William Henry Tucker, a British turfgrass expert, drew a full 18, but only nine were built: today's 1, 4 through 10, and 18. Money ran out for decades. Work on the rest started in 1955 under Billy Bell, known for Riviera, Bel-Air and Torrey Pines, and his son William Francis Bell, and the second nine opened in September 1956.

It's one of 59 courses Yoink watches in the Salt Lake City area, and the closest alternative is Forest Dale Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
