Nibley Park Golf Course

Utah's first municipal course, opened in 1922 on the grounds of an old amusement park. It ends with two par 3s, the last one 167 yards over a lake.

About Nibley Park Golf Course

Nibley Park is a par-34 nine in the middle of Salt Lake City, 2,824 yards from the blue tees, and it's the oldest public course in Utah. Harold B. Lamb fit it onto 55 acres, using the stream and small brooks that were already there. Old trees crowd the fairways, so it feels more like a parkland club than a city nine, and the Wasatch Mountains are in view.

The finish is the famous part: two par 3s in a row, and the 167-yard 9th goes over a big lake to a guarded green, often with waterfowl around it. The city's goal is a two-hour round, and there are pull carts for walkers. The course records are 28 in competition and 26 in regular play.

Before golf, this was Salt Lake City's amusement ground. George and Mary B. Calder cleared it with oxen in the 1860s and turned a spring into a boating lake, with a racetrack and a dance pavilion. It was later renamed Wandamere. Charles W. Nibley, a Scottish-born businessman and Presiding Bishop of the LDS Church, bought it and gave it to the city in 1921, on the condition that it be a park and golf course for people who couldn't afford private club fees. It opened in May 1922 as Utah's first municipal course, was dedicated on May 20, and marked its centennial in 2022.
