About Forest Dale Golf Course
Forest Dale is where golf in Utah starts. It opened in 1906 as the Salt Lake Country Club, in what was then the separate Town of Forest Dale on land that had been Brigham Young's Forest Farm. The club picked the spot because it was outside city limits, where a liquor license was easier to get. President William Howard Taft played a round there in 1909, and the Frederick Albert Hale clubhouse from those days still stands, restored.
The country club moved to the mouth of Parley's Canyon in 1920, and Salt Lake City took over the course in 1935, opening it as a municipal course during the Depression. Apart from a stretch of LDS Church ownership from 1958 to 1970, it has been a city course since. William Howard Neff redesigned it in the late 1980s, updating the irrigation and layout while keeping the old feel.
The greens are the test. Several are the small, raised table-top originals, typical of early 20th-century design, and the city says they make the nine much harder than its yardage suggests. Miss one and you're chipping up to a small target. The goal is two hours for nine. There are indoor simulators, a 140-yard short range north of the 6th hole where you bring your own balls, a putting and chipping green, and the Pin High Cafe with a patio.
