About Meadow Lakes Golf Course

Meadow Lakes exists because of a wastewater problem. In 1988 the City of Prineville was facing fines of up to $25,000 a day over wastewater going into the Crooked River. The EPA suggested spraying it on a 400-acre alfalfa field; the mayor, city manager and council decided to build a golf course instead. Today the course is irrigated with that water, and nine evaporation ponds double as the water hazards.

Bill Robinson designed it, and it sits on the high desert among ponds, rock-rimmed buttes and green meadows, so expect water on plenty of holes. It's still a city-run municipal course, and it has hosted two Oregon amateur state championships, including the 1998 Oregon Mid-Amateur.

The project earned Meadow Lakes a spot among the first recipients of Golf Digest's Environmental Leaders award, and the course says other courses have been modeled on it. The Bend Bulletin has called it "one of Central Oregon's best golf values."
