About River's Edge Golf Course
River's Edge sits against the Deschutes River Canyon on Bend's west side, with the river, rock walls and mountains in view. Robert Muir Graves designed it for developer Clyde Purcell to follow the land, so the holes roll up and down through the terrain with ponds and bunkers worked in. The course itself says the elevation changes are significant: you can walk, but they recommend a cart.
It opened as nine holes in 1987, alongside Purcell's River House hotel, and became 18 in 1992 when the upper half of the property was added. After years of decline, Wayne Purcell announced in 2022 that it would close for housing. The homeowners around the course bought it instead and set it up as a non-profit chartered to stay an affordable public 18 for good.
The new owners have been putting money back in since: expanded fairways, work on the ponds and waterfalls, resized bunkers, heavy tree trimming and new lithium carts. There's a range, chipping and putting greens, and The Edge bar and grill, and the course is registered with Audubon International.
