Cleveland Golf Courses & Tee Times
Cleveland's public golf is built around Cleveland Metroparks, which runs nine courses across Cuyahoga County and logged over 400,000 rounds in each of the last two years. Its oldest are in the Rocky River valley: Little Met started as a temporary course in 1925, and Big Met opened in 1926 and turns 100 in 2026. The Metroparks calls Big Met probably Ohio's most played course, with over six million rounds. Golf here is old. The first Ohio Amateur was played at the Cleveland Country Club in 1904.

Who runs public golf in Cleveland
Cleveland Metroparks is the main operator: Big Met and Little Met in the Rocky River valley, Mastick Woods, Washington, Seneca in Broadview Heights, Sleepy Hollow in Brecksville, Manakiki in Willoughby, Ironwood in Hinckley and the par-3 Shawnee Hills. There is no resident card. Instead a $35 Bonus Rounds membership (2026) takes 20% off greens fees at all nine courses and adds a week to your booking window. The City of Cleveland owns 36-hole Highland Park in Highland Hills, the only public course near the east side, now run by Troon. It hosted the PGA Tour's Cleveland Open in 1964 and 1965, and Charlie Sifford was a pro there. Daily-fee courses fill in around the county lines, Fowler's Mill in Geauga County among them.
Public courses worth knowing in Cleveland
- Big Met Golf Course: Opened 1926 as Course #1 on a Stanley Thompson design. Over six million rounds, and the dike holding back the Rocky River runs along the course.
- Sleepy Hollow Golf Course: Stanley Thompson course from 1924, public since 1963, above the Cuyahoga River Valley in Brecksville. Hosts USGA qualifiers and the Greater Cleveland Amateur every other year. The Metroparks says Golfweek named it one of the top five Ohio courses you can play.
- Manakiki Golf Course: Donald Ross design on Howard Hanna's old summer estate in Willoughby. Public since 1961, sold to the Metroparks for a dollar on condition it stay a golf course. Holes 10 and 18 are the canyon holes.
- Seneca Golf Course: 36 holes in Broadview Heights, open since August 1, 1940, on the highest ground in Cuyahoga County. The city sold it to the Metroparks in 2011.
- Highland Park Golf Course: City-owned 36 holes by Sandy Alves, Donald Ross's Midwest associate. Cleveland Open stop in 1964 and 1965, host of the first PGA Minority Collegiate event in 1987, and Charlie Sifford's home course.
- Fowler's Mill Golf Course: Pete and Roy Dye built it for TRW in 1969-1971; it went public after a 1986 sale. 27 holes along the Chagrin River. The course cites Golfweek's 2021 pick as the best public course in Ohio.

Golf in Cleveland follows the seasons: spring openers and fall weekends are the busiest stretches, and summer mornings fill before afternoons.
Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.
When tee time cancellations happen
A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.
