About Big Met Golf Course

Big Met is the Metroparks' original course. In the early 1920s Rodney C. Sutton, sports director of the Cleveland Press, pushed the park board to build a pay-as-you-play course in the Rocky River Valley, and it opened in 1926 as Course #1 on a Stanley Thompson design. Golfers came by streetcar, on foot and on horseback. It has since hosted more than six million rounds, and the Metroparks believe it's the most played course in Ohio. It turns 100 in 2026.

The golf is friendly: gentle rolling hills, moderate length and only nine sand bunkers. It's a par 72 of 6,358 yards from the black tees (70.6 rating, 118 slope), down to 5,418 from the reds. What you'll remember is the dike that holds back the Rocky River, which you can see from several spots on the course.

It has changed plenty over the century. Fairway irrigation came in 1964, holes 7 and 8 were lengthened and remodeled in 1967, and a 1998 renovation added computerized irrigation and flood control. The original small clubhouse gave way in 2005 to a LEED-certified one, and the Grille and Terrace serve burgers, dogs and drinks.
