About Manakiki Golf Course

Manakiki is Cleveland Metroparks' Donald Ross course, in the North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby, 17 miles east of downtown. The scorecard dates it to 1929. It's a par 72 of 6,656 yards from the back, and it has a bit of everything: doglegs, water, up-and-down approach shots, back-to-back par 5s and a mix of tight and open holes. The pair everyone mentions are 10 and 18, mirror-image canyon holes that open and close the back nine.

The 200 acres were Howard Hanna's summer estate, and the name is believed to come from a Native American word for maple forest, for the maples along the fairways. A group from the Willowick Club turned it into Manakiki Country Club and made Hanna's mansion the clubhouse. In 1944 owners James and Fannie Brown offered it to the city of Cleveland, which said no, so the Metroparks bought it for one dollar on the condition that it stay a golf course forever. There's still a plaque for the Browns near the 18th green.

It stayed a private club through 1960 and opened to the public on January 1, 1961. In the 1950s it hosted the Carling Open, when the 8th was considered the hardest par 4 on tour. An electric trolley once hauled golfers from the 15th green up the slope to the 16th tee. A 1990 master plan added irrigation, a pond on 3, a restored pond on 15 and a full cart path, with the old bunkers to be brought back over time.
