About Dr. Charles L. Sifford Golf Course at Revolution Park
Sifford is Mecklenburg County's nine-hole course in South End, minutes from uptown, with the Charlotte skyline in view and Bermuda grass from tee to green. It's quick, and there's a big driving range and practice area on site, plus a Snack Shack you can call from the turn to order ahead.
The history is what sets it apart. It opened as Bonnie Brae (Gaelic for "pleasant hill"), an 18-hole, whites-only course owned by the City of Charlotte, laid out by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In December 1951 sixteen Black golfers were turned away, and on December 21 they petitioned the city. The case came to trial in December 1956, and Judge Susie Sharp ordered the Parks and Recreation Commission to stop turning away Black golfers. On January 9, 1957, James Otis Williams became the first Black golfer to play Bonnie Brae.
I-77 took the back nine when it was finished in 1976, and the nine that was left became Revolution Park Golf Course. In 2010 it was renovated and renamed for Dr. Charles L. Sifford, a Charlotte native who caddied at Carolina Country Club as a teen, became the first African American to earn a PGA Tour card, and went into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004.
It's one of 58 courses Yoink watches in the Charlotte area, and the closest alternative is Harry L. Jones, Sr. Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
