About Harry L. Jones, Sr. Golf Course
Harry L. Jones is one of Mecklenburg County's public courses, just off I-77 in southwest Charlotte and a few minutes from Charlotte Douglas airport. Kidwell and Hurdzan built it in 1987 as a reclamation project on the closed York Road Landfill, the second county property to become a golf course that way. It plays to 6,978 yards with four sets of tees, and it is Bermuda from tee to green. Map data counts 51 bunkers, water on six holes and trees along 14 of the 18.
For its first 30 years it was the Renaissance course. In June 2017 the county commissioners renamed it for Harry L. Jones Sr., Mecklenburg's first African American county manager and a recipient of the Order of the Hornet, the county's highest honor.
The county says the course has had maintenance problems over the years. It hired SCS Engineers to assess the site in 2017, finished a second engineering study in 2018, and brought in Ron Garl's design firm to work on a full redesign; on the county's project page, building it was not yet funded. For now there is a big driving range, a three-hole practice course, a snack shack and a covered second-floor deck. The county courses are run through a partnership of Mecklenburg County, First Tee and Troon.
