About Rocky River Golf Club
Rocky River is the City of Concord's course, run by Atrium Hospitality as part of the Embassy Suites Charlotte Concord Golf Resort and Spa. Dan Maples laid it out on the natural contours of the land, with the Rocky River and its wetlands along the edges.
The hole people bring up is the 3rd. During construction they hit a boulder too big to move, so it stayed, and now the tee shot plays around it. There are four sets of tees, and the practice area is a real one: a 10,000 square foot tee with grass and turf stations plus a big putting and chipping green.
Maples comes from Pinehurst golf. He was born there in 1947, worked on courses with his father Ellis, including Grandfather Mountain and the Dogwood Course at the Country Club of North Carolina, and started his own firm in 1984. If you want help with your game, the club has PGA teaching pros on staff.
It's one of 58 courses Yoink watches in the Charlotte area, and the closest alternative is Highland Creek Golf Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
