About The Golf Club at Middle Bay
Middle Bay is two courses in one. The holes out by the water are open and exposed, built by Alfred Tull on filled-in marsh in the early 1950s. The holes away from the water are tighter and tree-lined, the altered remains of the older Oceanside course. The course says you get water views on almost every hole, and the one people talk about is the par 3 that plays over the water toward Point Lookout. Map survey data counts water on 7 holes, 3 forced carries and 99 bunkers. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
The history starts in 1931 with the Oceanside Golf and Country Club, a John Duncan Dunn design that had just one water hole, and an artificial one at that. It hosted the 1938 Metropolitan PGA, and Pee Wee Reese and some Brooklyn Dodgers teammates played it after a 1950 rainout at Ebbets Field. In 1952 the school district took 35 acres north of Waukena Avenue for Oceanside High, which cost the club its first six holes. The club built south toward the bay instead, and Tull's Middle Bay opened as a private club in 1955.
It stayed private until Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused millions of dollars in damage and the club closed. A former member reopened it as the semi-private South Bay Country Club; after one season a lease dispute led to a new operator and the current name. Now every tee time is sold online, and the course has hosted PGA, MGA and LIGA events and Met PGA junior tour stops.
