McCullough's Emerald Golf Links

Stephen Kay built it on an old landfill in 2002: replica holes from St Andrews to Royal Troon, 100 feet of climb and a 7th after a lost MacKenzie design.

About McCullough's Emerald Golf Links

McCullough's is a links-style tribute course: Stephen Kay modeled 17 of the holes on famous courses in Scotland, Ireland and beyond, from St Andrews, Carnoustie and Prestwick to Gleneagles and Turnberry. It's par 71, about 6,600 yards, with wide fairways, grass mounds, big bunkers and undulating greens, and the wind matters. Water comes into play on five holes.

The site is the story. It was an old landfill, and Mayor James "Sonny" McCullough, pushed the project for a decade before it opened in 2002. Kay routed the tees and greens around more than 150 methane vents, hid the ones he couldn't miss behind berms, and moved 400,000 cubic yards of dirt. The result has 100 feet of elevation change, the only drop like it in the region, per the course, and the 11th and 12th climb to the highest point in the county, with the Atlantic City skyline in view.

The hole to know is the 7th, Kay's version of the prize-winning hole Alister MacKenzie drew in 1914 and never got to build: a three-acre waste area off the tee and a fairway about 160 yards wide. The 16th is a tiny-green take on Royal Troon's Postage Stamp, and the 8th and 18th drop into an old rock quarry around a shared pond. GOLF Magazine put it among the top new courses of 2002.
