About John F. Gaffney Green Tree Golf Course
Green Tree is the county course for Atlantic County, owned by the county and run by the Atlantic County Improvement Authority. It sits on Route 559, the Somers Point-Mays Landing Road, in Egg Harbor Township. On the card it's par 72 and only 5,574 yards from the blue tees (67.2 rating, 112 slope), but it doesn't play like a pushover. The fairways are tight and lined with trees, and the county itself says that's what it's known for, along with good greens.
The one to know about is the 3rd: a par 6, 676 yards from the blues and the number-one handicap hole. Most of the rest is short, with par 4s under 400 yards and a handful of par 3s, so the round is about placing the ball rather than bashing it. The map survey has trees along 17 of the 18 holes, 10 doglegs and only about 4 feet of elevation change, so it's about as flat as golf gets. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
There's a grass driving range, putting and chipping areas, lessons and junior clinics, and a restaurant with a full bar for after the round.
It's one of 30 courses Yoink watches in the South Jersey & the Shore area, and the closest alternative is Hamilton Trails Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
What it's like to play John F. Gaffney Green Tree Golf Course
Water is in play on 16 of the 18 holes, and you carry it on 7 of them, so bring a few extra balls. A creek or river runs through the property and comes into play on 3 holes. 10 of the 18 holes bend, so position off the tee matters more than length.
