About Lakewood Country Club
Lakewood is a public course now, but it's one of the old ones: par 72 and 6,589 yards, on land that was part of the Hyer Farm, settled in 1804. The club dates itself to 1896, and the course you play is essentially Walter Travis's 1920 redesign, which left no hole of the original untouched. Travis cut the 12th, 13th and 14th out of dense forest, and he and his contemporaries Gardiner White and William Reekie thought the new 14th was as good as any two-shot hole in the country. Since then about 80 to 100 yards have been added to the 13th and 15th and the 5th has been redesigned.
The history runs deep. Around the turn of the century Lakewood was golf's first big off-season destination, with a resort season from October 1 to June 1. Two clubs, the Golf Club of Lakewood and the Ocean County Hunt and Country Club, merged in 1902 and opened these links on 100 gently rolling acres in the spring of 1903. Travis listed four Lakewood holes among the country's best in Golf magazine in 1902, and the club's history also claims the first hole-in-one in the United States, made in 1895 at the Golf Club of Lakewood's earlier course. The Travis version hosted the 1922 Met Amateur, won by 20-year-old Jess Sweetser, 10 and 8 over J. Edward Hale in the final.
The grass driving range has covered tee boxes, a practice bunker and target greens, and the range and putting green are open to the public even if you're not playing. After the round, Maggie's is in the Claflin House, an 1885 mansion on the property.
