About Bel-Aire Golf Course

Bel-Aire is where a lot of Monmouth County golfers learn the game. The main course is an executive par 60 with six par 4s, and next to it is a 9-hole par 3 course, all on gently rolling ground at the corner of Routes 34 and 524. It's open year-round, the Park System runs a long list of beginner and intermediate clinics here, and kids 12 and under pay $5 on the par 3 course with a paid adult. Snacks come from vending machines.

Morten Hansen Jr., a Manasquan River Golf Club member, built it in 1964 on a former crop farm, paying for it partly with money he'd won in the Irish Sweepstakes in the 1950s. He designed all 27 holes himself, and he and his two sons ran it for 33 years, drawing beginners and older golfers who liked the shorter holes. When the family sold in 1997, Wall Township officials pushed the county to buy it and keep it as golf. It works: in 2009 Bel-Aire drew the second-most golfers of the Park System's six courses.
