About Hominy Hill Golf Course

Hominy Hill is Monmouth County's big course: 7,049 yards from the blues, rated 73.8 with a 135 slope, and 138 bunkers. Water is in play on only four holes, so the sand and the length do most of the work. It's rolling farmland with tributaries of the Mine Brook running through it, and the Tee It Forward markers are there if the blues are more than you want.

It started as one man's course. Henry Dickson Mercer Sr., president of the States Marine shipping company, bought farms in Colts Neck in 1941 for his Guernsey cattle and named the land Hominy Hill Farm after the old Manhomoney Hills. In 1963 he hired Robert Trent Jones Sr. to turn 180 acres into a course for entertaining foreign business contacts and told him to spare no expense. It opened in 1965 as a long par 72 of 7,120 yards, and outside of the odd charity day you played it only by invitation.

In 1975 the Mercer family agreed to sell to the county, then turned down higher offers from developers during the 18 months it took the Park System to line up a Green Acres grant. Since then it has hosted two USGA Amateur Public Links championships, and the county notes it has been voted the state's best public course by New Jersey Monthly readers.

It's one of 2 courses in Colts Neck on Yoink, and Pebble Creek Golf Club is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
