Cape May National goes by The Natural, and it earns it. The course wraps around a private 50-acre bird sanctuary, there isn't a house on the property, and on a given day you'll see turtles on the banks by the 10th, swans in the ponds at 6 and 11, herons in the reeds, and once in a while a bald eagle over the 9th, 10th or 18th. Bob Mullock, the owner, co-designed it with Karl Litten on 200 acres that were supposed to be a housing development, and it opened in 1991.
Don't let the scenery fool you. Mullock wanted you in the teeth of it right away: the 2nd is a long par 4 with fescue hills left and trees right, and the 4th, a 554-yard dogleg left, asks for a 150-yard carry over marsh from the back three tees. The back nine opens up, but the last five holes are the hard part, and the par-4 18th, with water down the left and wrapping a two-tiered green, is what Atlantic City Weekly called arguably the toughest finishing hole in South Jersey. It's a par 71 with five sets of tees, 6,905 yards from the tips down to 4,711 (2021 figures).
The club traces its roots to the old Cape May Country Club of the late 1800s. Skee Riegel, the 1947 U.S. Amateur champion, is listed as its professional emeritus. It has been the home course for Lower Cape May Regional High School's team since it opened, and its annual Scramble Fore Scholarships event has raised more than $550,000 for Atlantic Cape Community College students.
