About Weequahic Golf Course
Essex County calls Weequahic the oldest public course in New Jersey. George Lowe, then the head professional at Baltusrol, laid it out, and it opened in 1914 in Weequahic Park, along the shore of the park's 200-acre lake. The new scorecard's hole names carry some of that history: the Back Stretch plays back toward what used to be a horse racing track.
Stephen Kay rebuilt it and it reopened in summer 2025 with new greens, tees and bunkers and a refined routing. It's short, par 70 and 5,558 yards from the blues, but the county says to expect more hills than you'd guess and newly contoured greens, and the card has a redan green and a volcano bunker to aim at. You'll see One World Trade Center and the Anheuser-Busch brewery from the course. It's a 90-degree cart rule course with soft spikes and collared shirts.
