About Skyway Golf Course at Lincoln Park West
Skyway sits on what used to be a landfill in Jersey City's Lincoln Park West. The old fill was excavated and capped, the ground raised to 25 to 45 feet and 35 acres of wetlands restored, and what came out of it plays like a links: grass-topped dunes, rolling bentgrass fairways, and fescue waiting in the second cut. It opened in 2015 as Hudson County's first public course. It's named for the Pulaski Skyway, and you play in its shadow, with the Manhattan skyline and the Freedom Tower off in the distance.
It's par 36 with three of each: three par 3s, three par 4s and three par 5s, 3,247 yards from the tips and a 142 slope from the black tees. The course calls the 459-yard 5th its strongest par 4, but the 8th is the one people remember, a 523-yard par 5 that SI measured at about a 225-yard carry over a Hackensack River tributary to a narrow green. The 9th is a 175-yard par 3 along the river, where the wind can have you hitting anything from wedge to 3-wood.
Roy Case and Jeff Grossman designed it, KemperSports runs it for the Hudson County Improvement Authority, and it became a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2024. Before the course, this corner of the park had batting cages and a driving range, the one that shows up in the pilot of The Sopranos.
