About Hendricks Field Golf Course
Hendricks Field is Essex County's Charles Banks course and the only one he designed for public use. Seth Raynor was supposed to build it but died first, and Banks, his associate, took it over; it opened in 1929. That lineage shows in the holes. You start on an Alps, the 8th is a Redan, the 12th has a Biarritz green and the 15th has a Principal's Nose.
It's not long. The Worldgolfer blog put it just under 6,200 yards in 2023, so the test is the greens more than the distance. The course runs through cherry trees and oaks and feels like an extension of Branch Brook Park next door. Holes 11 through 17 are across Belleville Avenue, so you cross a busy road twice in the round.
The county has rebuilt tees, bunkers and greens and fixed the drainage over the years. The Worldgolfer blog says Stephen Kay's 2021 renovation added a three-hole First Tee practice area, several new holes (the 154-yard Biarritz 12th is one) and new tees. The course was the site of the 72nd New Jersey Junior Girls Championship.
