About Galloping Hill Golf Course
Locals call it The Hill, and the name fits: 271 acres of rolling hills and valleys across Kenilworth and Union, with a reputation as one of the tougher courses around. It's a par 71 at 6,845 yards from the back tees.
Willard Wilkinson, who had worked with A.W. Tillinghast and Donald Ross before starting his own firm in 1924, designed it, and it opened in 1928. Union County owns it, and KemperSports has managed it since 2010. The county's plan to bring the New Jersey State Open here led to a Rees Jones renovation, finished in spring 2014, that went back to Wilkinson's original shot values, fixed the drainage, cleared trees and rebuilt every bunker.
In 2016 it became the first county-owned course to host the State Open, and only the second public one in 86 years. The New Jersey State Golf Association's headquarters sits in the clubhouse, overlooking the first tee. Next door, the Learning Center has 52 range stalls, 20 of them covered and heated, plus a 9-hole practice course (2,348 yards, par 33).
It's one of 75 courses Yoink watches in the Northern & Central New Jersey area, and The Learning Center at Galloping Hill is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
