Southern & Western Maine Golf Courses & Tee Times

Southern Maine golf runs from York County up through Portland and Brunswick, then inland toward Augusta and the western mountains. Some of it is old. Brunswick Golf Club traces its origins to the late 1800s and was one of the founding clubs of the Maine State Golf Association in 1917. Cape Neddick's first nine was a Donald Ross layout in the early 1900s. Newer daily-fee courses fill in around Portland, like Nonesuch River in Scarborough (Tom Walker, par 70) and Dunegrass in Old Orchard Beach (Dan Maples, par 72). Up in the mountains, Sunday River and Sugarloaf both have Robert Trent Jones Jr. courses.

Who runs public golf in Southern & Western Maine

The City of Portland owns and runs Riverside, which opened as nine holes in 1932 and grew to 18 in 1937 with WPA money. It now has an 18-hole course, a 9-hole course and a 3-hole practice course along the Presumpscot River, and it hosted 42 Maine Opens between 1938 and 2010. Riverside prices its memberships separately for Portland residents and non-residents, and it wasn't taking new members for 2027 (there's a waitlist). Cumberland owns Val Halla, where town residents get 10% off green fees. Riverside, South Portland Municipal and Val Halla have taken part in Youth on Course, with rounds for kids at $5 or less.

Why tee times in Southern & Western Maine are hard to get

Golfers in Southern & Western Maine get maybe six months of good weather, and they all want the same weekend mornings. Demand bunches up from May to September.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Keep a quicker course in your back pocket. Nine-hole and executive courses are easier to get on and play faster. Around here that includes The Links at Sebasco Harbor Resort and Wawenock Golf Club.
