Midcoast & Down East Maine Golf Courses & Tee Times
Golf came early to the Maine coast. Summer people on Mount Desert Island and Penobscot Bay were laying out holes in the 1890s. Kebo Valley in Bar Harbor dates to 1888 and calls itself the oldest golf club in Maine. Northeast Harbor's first holes went in on pasture in 1895, and Megunticook in Rockport was founded in 1899. Inland, Bangor runs the region's big municipal course, a 27-hole Geoffrey Cornish layout that opened in 1964.

Who runs public golf in Midcoast & Down East Maine
The City of Bangor owns and runs Bangor Municipal: an 18-hole course (6,345 yards, par 71) and the Kelly Nine, added in 1989 and named for the course's first pro. A 2024 Bangor Daily News story said green fees and other revenue more than cover its costs, and 32,000 rounds were played there in 2023. Bangor Muni has also been a Youth on Course site, with rounds for kids at $5 or less. Most of the coast's historic courses are clubs. Megunticook, for one, is a private member club.

Why tee times in Midcoast & Down East Maine are hard to get
The season in Midcoast & Down East Maine is short, running roughly from late spring into fall, so every good weekend in that window is contested. The first warm Saturdays of the year are the hardest tee times to get.
Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.
When tee time cancellations happen
Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.
- Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
- Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
- Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
- Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
- Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Bangor has 1 courses on Yoink and Bucksport has 1.
