About Kebo Valley Golf Club
Kebo Valley is one of the oldest courses in the country, on Mount Desert Island right against Acadia National Park. The club was incorporated in 1888, Herbert Leeds' first six holes were done in 1891, and the club likes to point out that only seven courses still operating in 2000 were older. The routing grew to nine holes in 1896 and to 18 in 1920, when the club bought 40 acres east of Harden Farm Road for the outer nine. Leeds kept coming back, and with redesigns by member Waldron Bates and pro Shirley Liscomb, his hand is on the 18 you play today.
The club calls it a links-style course, and the wind, the seasons and the angle of the sun change how it plays. Kebo Brook runs through the front nine, and there are plenty of elevated tees. The 8th is the No. 1 handicap, the hole Walter Hagen called maybe the toughest par 4 he'd played. The 17th is the Taft Hole: in 1911 President Taft made a 27 there, 17 of those shots in the big bunker set into the hill in front of the green.
The famous names go back a long way. Harry Vardon played an exhibition in 1900. Hagen shot 70 and then a course-record 67 in 1922, and it held for 50 years until club pro Lew Hersey shot 65. In 1926 Donald Ross wrote that the third should be rebuilt, and the uphill climb to the old "Shangri-La" green was dropped. The Fire of 1947 took the second clubhouse along with much of Bar Harbor, and Kebo hosted its first Maine Amateur in 1960.
