Northeast Harbor Golf Club

Golf here began in 1895 with cows as hazards. Herbert Strong's outer nine went back to the woods in 1939 and was rebuilt hole by hole, whole again in 2000.

About Northeast Harbor Golf Club

It's a short, old, tight course on Mount Desert Island, a mix of links-style and parkland holes among the pines and glacial rock of the island. Accuracy matters more than length. The club's own hole notes keep saying the same thing: the trouble is behind the greens, so don't be long. The Mill Brook crosses the fifth 80 yards short of the green, the 13th green has water on three sides, the 14th has the most heavily bunkered green on the course, and the eighth tee is one of the two highest spots on the property, where the wind gets a say.

The history is unusual. J.G. Thorp laid out nine rough holes on Corson's Farm in 1895, with cows wandering the fairways, and the players were soon arranging matches with Kebo Valley. Forty-nine shareholders incorporated the club in 1916, Arthur Lockwood's inner nine opened in 1919, and Herbert Strong added nine more in 1925 for a full 18.

Then it shrank. In 1939, the outer nine were left to nature due to hardship, and for decades the club played as a 15-hole course. From the 1970s summer families and year-round neighbors brought the lost holes back one at a time, and by 2000 it was whole again. The emblem is a pine tree with the motto Far and Sure.
