Cape Neddick Country Club

Began as three holes on a summer estate in 1900. Donald Ross expanded it, Brian Silva rebuilt the lost nine in 1999, and rounds run under four hours.

About Cape Neddick Country Club

Cape Neddick starts with John Pickering putting three holes on his summer estate in 1900. They became six, then nine by World War I, and in 1919 the club became Cliff Country Club with Donald Ross laying out a full 18, finished by 1925. Old members remember a one-day caddy strike over raising the rate from 50 to 75 cents a round. Nine of Ross's holes were later abandoned, and for decades it ran as a nine-holer. Fifteen of Pickering's friends formed Cliff Realty Corporation in 1949, and it still owns the club.

The old holes sat in what are now protected wetlands, so the owners hired Brian Silva, who grew up playing here as a summer kid, to build a new nine that feels like Ross. The reconfigured 18 opened semi-private in 1999, nine years after the club took the Cape Neddick name.

It's par 70 and only 6,257 yards from the back (70.1 rating, 125 slope), and rounds usually take under four hours. Short doesn't mean easy: the 3rd is a 586-yard par 5 with a blind uphill second, the 9th is the only forced carry, 140 yards over wetland, and you drive over the road on 18. The walks from green to tee are short and there are no houses on the course. It sits on Shore Road, a few minutes from Ogunquit and York beaches.

It's one of 16 courses Yoink watches in the Southern & Western Maine area, and the closest alternative is The Ledges Golf Club, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
