About Brunswick Golf Club

Golf at Brunswick goes back to the summer of 1898, when Bowdoin students J.H. Henry and Benjamin L. Furbish, joined by professor Harry C. Emery, went down the old Freeport Road looking for a field to play. The ground they found is today's back nine. The club started that September as the Bowdoin Golf Club and took the Brunswick name in 1901. Wayne Stiles and his apprentice John Van Kleek redesigned that original nine in 1921, and the club says Stiles's work still shows there. Geoffrey Cornish added the other nine with longtime pro Mal Strange, finished in 1969; it's now the front.

From the Blue tees it's 6,627 yards, par 72 (37 out, 35 in), and the front has a quirk regulars know: back-to-back par 5s at 2 and 3, then back-to-back par 3s at 4 and 5, the 5th only 112 yards. The 6th is the hard par 4, and the 9th is a par 5 with the approach over water. The fairways are tree-lined, and the club has long been called one of the easiest walks in Maine.

The history runs deep. Charles "Pop" Erswell ran the club from 1920 to 1946, started the group in 1903 that became the Maine State Golf Association, and is credited by various sources with inventing the golf pull cart. It's home to Bowdoin's team and has hosted the 98th Maine Amateur in 2017, the Maine Women's Amateur in 2013 and 2023, and the 2024 NESCAC tournament.
