About Coffin Golf Club
Coffin is the Indy Parks course along the White River, 18 holes, par 72 and 6,789 yards. It's tight: tree-lined bluegrass fairways, bentgrass greens, water on seven holes and rolling ground that climbs to the second-highest point in Indianapolis. The routing is squeezed by the VA hospital, so the front nine sits to the south and the back nine to the north, and the 10th and 18th run side by side between the hospital and the river.
Golf here goes back to 1904, when the private Highland Golf Club opened nine holes and a clubhouse on land leased from Riverside Park. When the last lease ran out in 1921 the city took it over, Highland moved to Rocky Ripple, and by 1924 it was the Charles E. Coffin Golf Course, named for a real estate developer who sat on the park board for years. The USGA held its National Public Links championship here in 1935, 1955 and 1972. The VA hospital went up in 1930-32 and forced a redesign, and the course was rebuilt again in 1995.
The old clubhouse, the 1870s Wacker House, served Coffin golfers from 1921 to 1953 and has been the Iron Skillet restaurant since. The current clubhouse dates to about 1962. Much of the course is in the White River floodplain, so it floods now and then. When Indy Parks planned Riverside's future in 2017, Coffin was the course picked to stay and be improved.
