About Brickyard Crossing
This is the golf course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pete Dye redesigned it in 1992 and it reopened in 1993 as Brickyard Crossing: 14 holes east of the backstretch and four in the infield. The track is part of the round. A ball that flies the Raceway and lands on another part of the course is out of bounds, and the map survey shows water in play on nine holes, seven of them forced carries. Golf here goes back to 1929, when Bill Diddel’s Speedway Golf Course opened with nine holes outside the track and nine in the infield. Nine more came in 1965, making 27 holes with the "Track Nine" still inside the oval. The 500 Festival Open was played on Memorial Day weekend from 1960 to 1968, taking Sunday off for the race and finishing Monday. Billy Casper won it three times and Gary Player won in 1964. The Champions Tour came from 1994 to 2000, and the LPGA from 2017 to 2019, when Lexi Thompson won the first edition.
The best story never left the practice green. In September 1964 the Beatles stayed at the old Speedway Motel after two shows at the State Fairgrounds, borrowed whatever clubs they could find and posed on the putting green. One of the photos hangs in the clubhouse entrance, and another became the cover of a 45 with "Eight Days A Week" and "I’m A Loser."
