About Sahm Golf Course

Pete and Alice Dye laid this out in 1963, when the city called it North Eastway, and it's one of Pete's earliest designs, coming after a nine-holer at El Dorado and an 18 for Michigan's Harlan Hatcher. It's a flat, open, tree-lined par 70 on the northeast side, just off I-465 and Allisonville Road, and Indy Parks still runs it as one of the city's public courses, with Cooprider Golf Management handling day-to-day operations for more than 30 years.

The scoring happens around the greens. They're large, so hitting them isn't the hard part, and the course itself says they put a premium on putting and chipping. Water comes into play on six holes and sand on nine, so there's enough to think about without the round turning into a grind. From the Black tees it's 6,458 yards (69.9 rating, 116 slope), and the White, Gold and Red tees drop that to 6,066, 5,254 and 4,836.

The ground is flat, so carrying your bag is no hardship, and there's a driving range that stays open until dark, lessons with PGA staff, leagues and a snack bar with beer. Leave the cooler in the car, since outside food and drink aren't allowed, and don't bring a fivesome: staff pair singles into threesomes and foursomes.
