Indiana Golf Courses & Tee Times

Indiana's golf association is older than most. Francis Herd of the Country Club of Indianapolis called the meeting in 1900 that formed the Indiana Golf Association, and it held the first State Amateur that October at his club. Harry Miller of Terre Haute won. The state's golf name, though, is Pete Dye. He lived in Indianapolis, and the state promotes a seven-course Pete Dye Golf Trail that runs from Brickyard Crossing, with four holes inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to French Lick in the southern hills. Indianapolis also opened the country's fourth municipal course, Riverside, in 1900.

Who runs public golf in Indiana

Indiana Golf, in Lawrence, is the headquarters for five nonprofits, including the IGA, the Indiana Section PGA and the Indiana Golf Foundation. The IGA and the Indiana Section PGA joined forces in 1972 as the IGA-PGA, one of the few joint amateur and pro bodies in the country. For juniors, the foundation backs First Tee-Indiana, and the association runs a Prep Tour for ages 8 to 12 and the Howard Bailey Junior Tour for 13 to 19. Public golf in the cities is run by parks departments; in Indianapolis, Indy Parks owns courses including Eagle Creek, Coffin and Sahm. We found no statewide golf pass or state parks golf system.

Getting a tee time in Indiana

Golf in Indiana follows the seasons: spring openers and fall weekends are the busiest stretches, and summer mornings fill before afternoons.

Each course releases its tee times on its own schedule, commonly a week or two out, with residents of town and county courses often booking first. Leagues, outings and members claim chunks of the sheet in advance, and whatever prime weekend times are left tend to go on release day.

Booked-up doesn't mean gone. Plans change: groups cancel ahead of the course's cancellation deadline (often 24 to 48 hours out), players drop when the forecast turns, and a group that shrinks leaves an open spot. Those times quietly come back on the booking page, usually for minutes, not hours.
