Lafayette & West Central Indiana Golf Courses & Tee Times

This stretch of the Wabash country runs from Lafayette and Purdue out to Attica, Logansport, Monticello and Fowler, and across the line to Danville and Watseka in Illinois. The golf is older than it looks. Logansport Golf Club dates to 1904 on Cedar Island in the Wabash River, and Harrison Hills in Attica opened as a nine in 1924. Purdue's two courses in West Lafayette carry Pete Dye's name and sit on the state's Pete Dye Golf Trail. Logansport also produced Herb Graffis, the golf writer who founded the National Golf Foundation and went into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977.

Who runs public golf in Lafayette & West Central Indiana

Much of the daily-fee golf here is run by management companies and clubs rather than parks departments. O'Neal Golf Management of Carmel runs Harrison Hills and the Benton County Golf Course in Fowler, a 1943 William Diddel design whose course and clubhouse are open to the public, along with Battle Ground Golf Club near Lafayette. Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex has two 18-hole Pete Dye courses: Ackerman-Allen, first built in 1934 and rebuilt by Dye in 2014, and Kampen, a links-style par 72 of more than 7,400 yards that Dye reworked in 1996. In Danville, Harrison Park Golf Course covers 235 acres along the North Fork of the Vermilion River.

Why tee times in Lafayette & West Central Indiana are hard to get

The season in Lafayette & West Central Indiana runs roughly from spring to late fall. The first warm weekends in spring and the cool, dry weekends of fall are the hardest to book.

Most public courses open their tee sheet a set number of days ahead, often 7 to 14, and many municipal courses give residents or card holders an earlier window. The best weekend-morning times usually go the day they're released. Leagues and outings take blocks of the sheet before the public ever sees them.

When tee time cancellations happen

A full tee sheet rarely stays full. Many courses let you cancel without a fee up to 24 or 48 hours before your time, so spots tend to reappear in the last couple of days. A bad forecast shakes more loose, and a foursome that drops to three opens a single. None of it is announced. The time just shows up again on the booking page, and whoever looks first gets it.

Doing it by hand? Here's what works.

  1. Know the booking window. Find out how many days ahead each course releases times, and whether residents get an earlier window. Be ready the morning it opens.
  2. Look again 24 to 48 hours out. That's when most cancellation deadlines pass and spots come back.
  3. Be flexible on group size. Singles and twosomes fit into gaps a foursome can't.
  4. Try twilight and weekday afternoons. They're the last to fill and often cheaper.
  5. Widen the map. If your first choice is full, check the next town over. Fowler has 1 courses on Yoink and Attica has 1.
