Temple Terrace Country Club

Tom Bendelow's 1921 figure-eight through the old orange groves; Billy Graham settled on preaching on the 18th green in 1939. A private club today.

About Temple Terrace Country Club

Temple Terrace is a private club, and its course is a piece of Florida history. Developers brought Tom Bendelow down from Chicago in 1921; the first nine opened in 1922 and the full 18 the next year. He laid it out as a figure eight through orange groves and housing lots of a land-boom town, with no parallel fairways and roads beside most holes so galleries could follow play by car. The land had been the Potter Palmer family's winter hunting preserve on the Hillsborough River.

Today it's a par 72 with four sets of tees that ran from about 5,400 to 6,400 yards in 2016, winding through the Temple Terrace Estates neighborhood. The holes still carry Scottish-style names, from Tower at the 1st to Devil's Delight at the 16th and Hillside at the 18th.

The stories are the draw. "Long" Jim Barnes was the first head pro, Al Jolson performed at the club and its 1920s casino, and the Florida Open was first played here in 1925. In 1939 Billy Graham, then a student at the Florida Bible Institute (now Florida College), decided on his life's work while meditating on the 18th green one night. The course was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2012, and the club hosts the U.S. Professional Hickory tournament.
