About Rocky Point Golf Course

Rocky Point is a Tampa Sports Authority course, and it's one of the oldest in Florida. It's an 18-hole par 71 with four sets of tees from about 4,900 to 6,300 yards, so it's not a long test, and a lot of the property is set aside as wildlife habitat and bird sanctuary. There's a full driving range, a pro shop and a restaurant, and it's home to The First Tee of Tampa Bay.

The history is the reason to know it. The Tampa Automobile Club started it in 1911 and hired F.G. Byrd, the 1910 Southern Golf Champion, to design it; Byrd wanted a palmetto planted at every tee. Nine holes opened in 1912 and the full 18, all 5,303 yards of it, in 1913. In December 1915 it hosted the first statewide amateur under the new Florida State Golf Association. In 1926 A.W. Tillinghast, in town to build Davis Islands, went around in 90 using nothing but a mid iron, and in 1931 former Rocky Point caddy Ed Dudley won the Western Open, beating Walter Hagen by four.

During World War II the federal government took it over for Drew Field, built barracks on it to hold prisoners of war, and later ran it for the servicemen stationed there. In 1953 the government handed it to the City of Tampa for $1.00, and a local couple reopened it on a 25-year lease in 1954. It grew to 27 holes in the early 1960s, the Tampa Sports Authority took over in 1978, and a 1983 redesign credited to Willie Black and Ron Garl brought it back to 18. It's part of the Florida Historic Golf Trail.
