About Babe Zaharias Golf Course
Locals call it The Babe. It opened in 1926 as the Forest Hills Golf and Country Club in northwest Tampa, with riding stables on the south end, only 10 homes around it, and a two-story clubhouse with a ballroom. In 1949 Babe Didrikson Zaharias, whom the course calls the female athlete of the 20th century, bought it. She ran it for seven years, played most days on her own or with the Men's Club, gave clinics and exhibitions, and is said to have lived on the clubhouse's second floor for a while.
After she died of cancer in September 1956 the course closed. It grew over, motorcycle riders took over the fairways, teenagers took over the clubhouse, and in 1962 the clubhouse burned down. The City of Tampa took the property, reopened it in 1974 and kept her name, and the Tampa Sports Authority has run it since, along with Rocky Point and Rogers Park. It's on the Florida Historic Golf Trail.
The greens are new. In 2024 all 18, plus the practice putting green, were rebuilt with TifEagle and new greenside bunkers went in, a $1,000,000 job on top of recent clubhouse work. There's no driving range, just a free warm-up net and putting and chipping greens, so get there a little early.
