About Countryway Golf Club

Countryway is an executive course with a real architect behind it. Steve Smyers designed the par 61, and it's built from eleven par 3s and seven par 4s, 3,528 yards in all. Don't mistake short for easy: water comes into play on 14 holes and the greens and fairways roll. It's a course where your irons and your putter do the work, and the driver can mostly stay in the bag.

It's family owned by the Sherlock and Creighton families, and the Creightons are a hockey family: Dave Creighton played in the NHL for Boston, the Rangers, Toronto and Chicago, and his son Adam played for five NHL teams, the Lightning among them. The club's page says Daily Planet readers voted it the best value golf course in Tampa Bay.

There's a practice green, a practice bunker and a chipping area for the short game, plus a pro shop and a restaurant. It's a good place to take a beginner or sharpen your wedges without giving up a whole day.

It's one of 9 courses in Tampa on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Westchase Golf Club, about 1 mile away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
