About Rogers Park Golf Course
Rogers Park sits on 160 acres with the Hillsborough River on three sides, so once you're out on the course there are no houses and no traffic, just river and trees, 20 minutes from downtown. The Tampa Sports Authority runs it, and it's the home of the Tampa City Men's Open Championship. There's a driving range and a 3-hole short-game course next to the big course.
The history is why people drive across town for it. During segregation Rogers Park was the only picnic ground for Tampa's African-American community, and Mayor Curtis Hixon let a group of caddies from Palma Ceia Country Club build a 9-hole course there. Willie Black, the first head pro, led the volunteers, and they cleared the trees and shaped the holes by hand. It was finished in 1952, and for years it was the only course Tampa's Black golfers could play. Charlie Sifford, Ted Rhodes and Charles Owens all played it, and the United Golfers Association's Mid Winter Classic started here in 1963. Black is in the National Black Golf Hall of Fame, and the course is on the Florida Historic Golf Trail.
The Tampa Sports Authority took over in 1976 and hired Ron Garl for a $400,000 renovation that added irrigation and spread the course onto city land across the street. A $4 million job in 2000 rebuilt the greens and reshaped holes, then came a new maintenance compound in 2001 and a new clubhouse in 2002.
