About Tarpon Springs Golf Course
Tarpon Springs has been a city golf course for more than a century, and it bills itself as Florida's oldest municipal. A club formed in 1912, a local builder put in the first holes, and the city hired William D. Leith, a Scot from Edinburgh who was the pro at Northland Country Club in Duluth, to finish them. In 1926 the city brought in Wayne Stiles and John R. Van Kleek to rebuild that nine and add nine more, for $17,600: big greens, several ponds and a lot of doglegs. Mark Mahannah did more design work in the late 1950s.
Gene Sarazen wintered in nearby New Port Richey and played here regularly in the 1930s. The Tampa Tribune reported that he worked out at Tarpon Springs every day before the 1936 Masters, the year after his famous double eagle at Augusta. The course is on the Florida Historic Golf Trail.
Today it's par 72 and not long: four sets of tees from about 4,800 to 6,000 yards, plus 3,400-yard family tees for beginners, juniors and older players. The city closed it for more than a year and reopened it on September 20, 2014, with all 18 greens rebuilt in Seashore paspalum, recontoured, and with re-sanded bunkers and new tees. The fairways and tees are 419 Bermuda, and a round usually takes 3½ to 4½ hours.
