About Esplanade at Azario Lakewood Ranch
Chris Wilczynski, who worked for Arthur Hills before starting his own firm in 2010, built this course for Taylor Morrison's Esplanade at Azario community. The land was flat, so his crew dug several large lakes and used the fill to shape the course, the home sites and the roads. It plays from about 3,500 to over 7,000 yards, with wide fairways, 65 medium-depth bunkers and five holes that run along and through mature oaks and pines. There are ponds and wetlands, but almost no forced carries.
Two holes have names worth knowing. The 12th, Enclave, plays up to a raised green ringed by deep bunkers and native plants. The 17th, Big Oak, asks for a tee shot across a lake to a multi-tiered green of about 9,000 square feet next to the biggest native oak on the property.
It opened on May 18, 2020, about two months late because of the pandemic. Golf Course Architecture described it at the time as a resident-only private course, while GolfPass reported public tee times until the community neared build-out, so check how you can get on before you plan a round.
It's one of 3 courses in Lakewood Ranch on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Calusa Country Club, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
