About Bent Tree Country Club

Bent Tree has more tour history than almost anywhere else in Sarasota. It hosted the LPGA's Sarasota Classic every year from 1976 to 1988, and the winners list reads like a Hall of Fame roll: Kathy Whitworth, Judy Rankin, JoAnne Carner, Beth Daniel, Patty Sheehan three times. Nancy Lopez won her first LPGA event here in 1978 and came back for her 35th win in 1987, the one that got her into the Hall of Fame. It has also held US Open qualifiers and the 1998 and 1999 Florida state high school championships.

Bill Lewis designed it and it opened on October 1, 1975. Ward Northrup redid the greens in 1994, and in 2015 the nines were reversed, Keith Pope designed four new holes on what's now the back nine, and the greens went to TifEagle. It's par 72, from 4,278 to 6,606 yards over six sets of tees, laid out among mature oaks, lakes and streams so it feels like an older northern course.

The two holes the club points to are the 3rd, a par 3 that needs 185 yards of carry over water onto a steep front slope, and the 9th, a 511-yard par 5 that doglegs twice with water left, right and in the middle before you reach a three-tiered green. Plenty of regulars say the back nine is the better half. The club calls it very walkable and encourages walking any time.

It's one of 9 courses in Sarasota on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Misty Creek Country Club, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
