City Park Golf Course

Denver's first public course, a 1913 Tom Bendelow layout on an old dairy farm, rebuilt to hold floodwater. The skyline and the mountains are in view.

About City Park Golf Course

City Park is Denver's original public course, opened in 1913 on what had been a dairy farm, to a Tom Bendelow design. It has long called itself the People's Course, and it had a reputation to match: a Denver golfer told the Denver Post in 2008 that it had been "the No. 1 place (in the country) to go to find a money game."

The course you play now is a full redesign by Todd Schoeder, built to solve a flooding problem. About 20 acres of the course can hold almost 75 million gallons of stormwater and let it drain within hours, and the water treatment channel doubles as strategy. Eight of the original holes still sit in their old corridors; the greens are about 50% bigger on average, with 36 new bunkers, and Golf Course Architecture puts it at par 70. The ASGCA named Schoeder an honoree in its 2018 Design Recognition Program for the project.

It plays as urban parkland, with water features, some elevation change and big greens, and the city's panorama of the downtown skyline against the mountains. There's also a 4-hole course for the First Tee of Denver, a range, and the City Park Tavern, whose patio 5280's Top of the Town voted best in 2022.

It's one of 11 courses in Denver on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Foothills Executive Nine, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
