About Wellshire Golf Course
Wellshire is Denver Golf's Donald Ross course, and the city says it's the only public Ross design west of the Mississippi. It feels like the old country club it was built to be: fairways lined with mature trees and a Tudor-style clubhouse from 1927 that still stands. In its centennial year it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and the Colorado Register of Historic Places.
In 1924 a group of golfers hired Ross to lay out a course on the 137-acre Skeel family farm, four miles south of what was then Denver. The first nine opened on August 28, 1926, with a tournament, and members also had trap shooting and boating on Skeel Reservoir. The club went into foreclosure in 1936, and the city bought it for $60,000 and renamed it Wellshire Golf Course. It wasn't inside city limits until 1950; now homes surround it.
The tournament history is deep. It hosted the USGA Amateur Public Links in 1946, and Ben Hogan won the 1948 Denver Open here, his sixth straight tour win, with Dwight D. Eisenhower reported in the gallery. The Denver Open came back in 1958, when Tommy Jacobs won and Arnold Palmer finished third. At the 1959 Public Links, Bill Wright became the first African American to win a major national tournament. The Wellshire Fourball, first played in 1943, is the longest continuously running tournament in Colorado and is still played on Labor Day weekend.
Richard Phelps updated the tees, added cart paths and some mounding in 1992, and a new irrigation system went in in 1992-93. There's a putting green, a chipping green with bunkers, the Hogan's Alley junior course and the Golfers Pub; the driving range is closed for renovation for now.
