About Overland Park Golf Course
Overland Park is Denver Golf's link to the start of golf in Colorado. The course began as a nine-holer in the middle of a horse-racing track along the South Platte, and the property was the Denver Country Club until that club moved to Cherry Creek in 1902. Colorado AvidGolfer says it was the first USGA member club west of the Mississippi, and Harry Vardon came through to play a 36-hole exhibition, his ball against the best ball of the club's top three players; he won 3 and 2. The city calls it the oldest running course west of the Mississippi.
It plays like an old course. The fairways are narrow, the greens are small and well bunkered, and the Colorado Golf Association points out how many trees line the fairways. From the back tees it's a par 72 of 6,727 yards, finishing with a 572-yard par 5, and there are three shorter sets down to 4,969, so it's easy to find a tee that fits. You get views of downtown and the mountains, and it's only minutes from the city center.
There's a grass range (it moves to mats from Labor Day through the winter), chipping and putting greens, a three-hole junior course, and the Overland Park Tavern, which opens at 6 a.m. in summer.
It's one of 11 courses in Denver on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Harvard Gulch Golf Course, about 2 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
