Riverside Golf Course

The front nine dates to 1929, on the ground where Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders trained. The San Antonio River splits the nines.

About Riverside Golf Course

Riverside sits four miles south of downtown, and the San Antonio River runs between the two nines. The front opened in 1929, which makes it one of the city's oldest courses; 11 holes were added in 1968 and the current back nine was finished in the mid-1970s. Because the sides come from different eras they play differently: the front is tree-lined and punishes a loose tee shot, the back is more open and gives you birdie chances.

It starts with a par 5 that tempts you to go for it in two, with big oaks guarding the green. From the back it's a par 72 of 6,694 yards (72.0 rating, 128 slope), and the course calls it forgiving for beginners. Harold Henk and Vernon Schmidt are credited with the original layout, and Jeffrey Blume led the recent redesign.

The history is the fun part. In 1898 Teddy Roosevelt came here to train with the 1st Volunteer Cavalry, the Rough Riders, and the course sits on that ground. The 9-hole par 3 next door is called the Teddy Bear in his honor: holes of 80 to 120 yards through big trees to small, tilted greens, a good place to work on your wedges. The city owns it, and the non-profit Alamo City Golf Trail runs it.
