About Brackenridge Park Golf Course

Old Brack is a city-park course just north of downtown, next to the zoo and the Witte, and it plays short: par 71, 6,243 yards from the back (70.3 rating, 126 slope). The Alamo City Golf Trail calls it the heart of the city's eight-course system. A $4.5 million restoration in 2008 put A.W. Tillinghast's 1916 routing back in place, with John Colligan restoring 15 of the original holes on 113 acres. Warm-up is two bays, not a full range, so loosen up before you get there.

The history is the reason to come. The city built it in 1915 and 1916 as the oldest 18-hole public course in Texas, on parkland George W. Brackenridge gave the city. The Texas Open was born here and stayed until 1940, then came back on and off through 1959. Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Jack Burke Jr. and Mike Souchak all won on it, and Souchak's 257 in 1955 set the PGA 72-hole scoring record. A year earlier Chandler Harper opened 63-63-63.

The course was shaped around an old 1885 limestone pump house. Gutzon Borglum, who carved Mount Rushmore, rented it as a studio from 1924, and it still looks out on the 17th hole. U.S. 281 was pushed through the back nine in 1968, which cost the course 10 acres until the restoration. The Texas Golf Hall of Fame is now in the clubhouse, and the course has been on its Registry of Historic Golf Courses since 1992.
